E.H. Barnum could fit lots of information in his ads for the combs manufactured at his Plattsburgh factory in early 1834. He boasted the best prices and the best assortment of superior quality combs made by experienced workmen – and, as we will see, workwomen.
Comb factories had been flourishing in the colonies since before the American Revolution. Combs were a basic commodity needed to remove lice, oil and other types of dirt from the human head which did not get washed as we do today.
