Schenectady’s Liberty Poles & Flags Feature At January Commemoration

Before the United States flag took its official and now more familiar form in 1777, several other flags served to protest infringements on liberties in the British colonies. One popular design, long before independence, simply proclaimed “Liberty.”

Protesting American colonists had been hoisting flags with the word “Liberty” since at least the time of the Stamp Act crisis of 1765. The dark blue silk Liberty Flag of Schenectady, believed to have been created between 1765 and 1771, had the word “Liberty” sewn on both sides.
