Alec Benjamin Drops New Song ‘I Sent My Therapist to Therapy’

Track marks the second offering from the pop artist’s next album, set to arrive in 2024

Singer-songwriter Alec Benjamin weaves a wild self-help yarn on his new song, “I Sent My Therapist to Therapy.”

The title is basically the conceit of the song, but Benjamin fills the verses with intricate storytelling, culminating in the chorus, “He said, I’ll tell you what I’m sorry but I thought I’d never see/A case as bad as yours/Don’t think I have a remedy/ Think he needs help now/Oh the irony/I’m so messed up I sent my therapist to therapy.” And, in the ultimate twist, the song ends with Benjamin’s therapist seeking out help, only to send his new therapist to therapy as well.

In the accompanying video for the song, directed by Matthew Trainor, Benjamin aptly plays both parts, patient and doctor. As patient Benjamin pours his heart out and doctor Benjamin grows increasingly unsettled, the visual offers quick cuts and off-kilter camera moves to punctuate the surreal story.

“Releasing this song is the ultimate form of therapy,” Benjamin said in a statement. “It combines the two most therapeutic things in my life into one; music and therapy itself. I hope listening to this song provides the same level of catharsis for anyone struggling with their mental health as writing it did for me.”

“I Sent My Therapist to Therapy” marks the second song Benjamin has shared from his next album, following “Different Kind of Beautiful,” released back in October. Benjamin hasn’t released any details about the new LP just yet — such as an official release date or track list — but it’s expected to arrive next year. His most recent LP, (Un)Commentary, arrived in April 2022.
