Singer and her brother-collaborator Finneas took home their second Best Original Song award at the Academy Awards on Sunday
Billy Eilish and Finneas have made Academy Awards history. The siblings and frequent collaborators took home the Best Original Song award for “What Was I Made For?,” their megahit ballad from Barbie — and with that trophy, Eilish became the youngest person to ever win two Oscars.
At age 22, she beat the previous record-setter, Luise Rainer, who won her second Best Actress Oscar at age 28, way back in 1938, as the Associated Press reports.
Finneas, age 26, also made history as the second youngest to take home a pair of Oscars. The co-writers won their first Oscar for “No Time to Die” from the James Bond film of the same name in 2021. The only others to win two Oscars before the age of 30 are Hilary Swank and Jodie Foster.
“I had a nightmare about this last night,” Eilish joked during her acceptance speech on Sunday. “I just didn’t think this would happen. I wasn’t expecting this. I feel so incredibly lucky and honored.”
“I’m grateful for this song and this movie and the way it made me feel,” she added, dedicating the award to the people impacted by Barbie and shouting out director Greta Gerwig. Finneas also chimed in, adding, “Thank you to our parents forever and ever and ever.”
Earlier in the night, the duo performed the song during the awards ceremony, where they received a standing ovation.
“What Was I Made For?” which placed ninth on Rolling Stone‘s “100 Best Songs of 2023” list, also won Song of the Year at the 2024 Grammys, where Eilish also performed the song live.
