American Football Sets LP1 25th Anniversary Tour

by NEW YORK DIGITAL NEWS

It’s been a little over a month since the Super Bowl, and (the indie rock band) are ready for a victory lap. This year marks a quarter of a century since the group released its self-titled debut, which has since become an emo touchstone. So the group is embarking on a trek it’s billing as “special LP1 anniversary shows,” but it has not specifically said whether it will play the whole album.

A short run of dates will kick off in Chicago this fall followed by gigs in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and New York City. Tickets for the shows go on sale this week with a variety of presales launching on separate days. The general on-sale begins Friday. Full details are on the band’s website.

In 2016, the band members told Rolling Stone about how they decided to reunite after they realized that American Football had found a new, younger audience. “We knew the band had some kind of following, because we’d keep getting royalty checks from Polyvinyl [Records] every year,” Mike Kinsella, who had been playing in another band called Owen, said. “I just assumed it was Owen fans that were buying the LP. … Every now and then, somebody at an Owen show would ask for ‘Never Meant.’ I didn’t realize my old band had taken on a life of its own.”

A 2014 reissue of American Football was a hit, though. Demand for the record crashed the band’s website and the then-15-year-old album made it up to Number 68 on the Billboard 200.
