Decimated: The 146th NY at The Battle of the Wilderness

146th New York Volunteers Civil War ReenactorsThe 146th New York State Volunteers was a Civil War unit raised in Oneida County. In the fall of 1862 the troops crossed the Rapidan River in Virginia with the United States Army of the Potomac.

Over the next two days, the 146th would engage with the Confederates in horrific field conditions and suffer the highest number of casualties the 146th saw in the entire war.

This May marks the 160th anniversary of the Battle of the Wilderness. Michael Fischer, a historian based in Jewell, NY, whose ancestors lived in Utica – including a great-granduncle who was captured at The Battle of Wilderness – will present a “Decimated: The 146th NY at The Battle of the Wilderness” on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 2 pm at the Oneida County History Center.

Utica’s Oneida County History Center is a private not-for-profit educational institution dedicated to preserving the history, heritage, and culture of the Greater Mohawk Valley.
