Ocean-Themed Professional Development Opportunities For NY Educators

DEC staff and members of the public participating in beach clean up in circa 2023 (DEC photo)The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s Division of Marine Resources will host ocean-themed professional development opportunities for grade 7 to 12 educators that focus on two of the largest issues facing global ocean resources, ocean acidification and plastic pollution.

Classes will take place at the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center located in Wantagh, Nassau County, Long Island. Both courses integrate the new New York State Science Learning Standards and count towards Continuing Teacher & Leader Education (CTLE) hours. All materials for the lessons are provided free of charge to attendees.

  • Ocean Acidification in the Classroom – Friday, May 3, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Ideal for earth science, marine science, biology, or oceanography 7-12 grade teachers. You can register to attend here.
  • Plastic Pollution and You – Saturday, May 4, 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Ideal for social studies, civics, earth science, marine science, and oceanography 7-12 grade teachers. You can register to attend here.
