Iroquois Smoke Dance Competition at Old Fort Niagara (provided)The Smoke Dance, rooted in Haudenosaunee tradition as a war dance, has evolved to showcase the incredible talents of both male and female dancers. Local and nationwide competitors will participate at Old Fort Niagara, vying for prizes and sharing the beauty of traditional Native regalia.

Old Fort Niagara’s second annual Smoke Dance competition, “Native Nations at Niagara,” is happening on Saturday, May 11, 2024. This event promises a day filled with cultural richness, celebration, and vibrant performances.

Throughout the day, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich history of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), who have helped to shape Fort Niagara‘s nearly 300-year legacy. The Fort’s interpretive staff will be on hand to share insights and stories, deepening your understanding of this vital cultural connection.

In addition to the Smoke Dance competition, there will be new elements to this year’s event, including hoop dance demonstrations by a national champion Native hoop dancer.

The event runs from 10 am to 5 pm, with the dance competition taking center stage from Noon until 4 pm.
