Oneida Community historic preservation tour (provided)The Oneida Community Mansion House is a National Historic Landmark and former home to the Oneida Community, one of the most radical and successful of the 19th century utopian societies.

On May 23, 2024 the Mansion House will host “Bricks and Copper and Slate, Oh MY!”: A Historic Preservation and Architecture Walking Tour,” led by Mike Colmey, Director of Buildings and Grounds and Tom Guiler, Director of Museum Affairs.

This tour delves into the preservation efforts and architectural history of the Mansion House, including the preservation materials used on the site and the architectural features of the Mansion House.

Guests will get up close access to the 10 year, $10 million historic preservation effort at the Mansion House — including the extensive work completed in Phase 1 and a preview of the work planned in Phase 2.

At the end of the tour guests will have the opportunity to buy a copy of Anthony Wonderley’s book The Look of Utopia, with newly published historic images and a detailed overview of the building’s architecture and history.

Oneida Mansion House is located at 170 Kenwood Avenue in Oneida, NY. Today, the Mansion House is a museum and performance center featuring tours, programs, music and culture with a historic inn, lodging, meeting and event space, landscaped gardens, grounds, trails and a historic golf course.

Their mission is to use its historic site and collection to share the story of the Oneida Community to explore pressing social issues that still confront audiences today.

The Mansion House is open for visitors and overnight guests daily. Guided tours are available by appointment. Landscaped gardens, grounds and trails are free to the public year round.
