Alexander Zverev vs Daniil Medvedev preview
Defending champion Alexander Zverev will face Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters 2025.
After a first-round bye, Zverev kicked off his title defense with a 6-7 (5), 6-1, 7-5 win over Camilo Ugo Carabelli. He was up against 15th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the third round. The German dictated the proceedings for most of the first set, breaking his rival’s serve twice to claim it.
Zverev struck first in the second set as well but Davidovich Fokina broke back immediately to level the score. The defending champion snagged another break of the serve in the seventh game, and remained in front until the end to register a 6-2, 6-4 win.
Medvedev commenced his run in Paris with a 6-1, 6-3 over Jaume Munar. He received a walkover from Grigor Dimitrov to reach the third round, where he took on Lorenzo Sonego. The Italian was off to a fast start, racing to a 3-0 lead in the first set.
Medvedev couldn’t recover from this setback, and thus lost the set. While he turned things around to take a 4-1 lead in the second set, Sonego fought back to level the score. Nevertheless, the Russian came out on top in the ensuing tie-break to take the set. He began the third set with a break of serve, and kept a tight leash on this advantage to score a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 win.

Medvedev earned a hard-fought win over Sonego and kept his hopes of qualifying for the ATP Finals afloat. He won 72 percent of his first serve points, and struck 28 winners against 13 unforced errors. Zverev, on the other hand, had an easy day at the office against Davidovich Fokina.
Zverev has already secured his ATP Finals spot, and now has his eyes set on defending his title in Paris. Novak Djokovic is the only player in the history of the tournament to have mounted a successful title defense. Considering his next opponent, this could be the end of the road for the German.
Medvedev has won eight of his last nine matches against Zverev, including their two meetings this year. They recently crossed paths at the China Open, and the Russian didn’t drop his serve even once during that encounter. Zverev has raised his level since that match, though that may not be enough to beat his nemesis.
