Key revelations and debate explained

The Stranger Things 5 documentary, titled One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, offers some insight into the making of the popular Netflix sci-fi series and offers some explanations about various aspects of its final season’s conclusion.

The two-hour documentary reveals that the Duffer Brothers began filming the final volume of season 5 without a completed script for the series finale.

“We went into production without having a finished script for the finale. That was scary because we wanted to get it right. It was the most important script of the season,” stated Ross Duffer.

The series has faced accusations from fans for rushing to an end, leaving viewers confused about the unanswered storylines. The Stranger Things 5 documentary presents viewers with scenes of the writers’ staff debating about the series’ storylines, even while filming episodes.

Details revealed in Stranger Things 5 documentary

In addition to the unreleased finale script, Stranger Things 5 documentary features the evident division in the writers’ room about other choices in the show. The most apparent division is concerning the decision to have the final battle occur in the Abyss itself (the home of Vecna), with what appears to be little resistance from the demogorgons that inhabit it.

This division is exemplified by the comment from writer Paul Dichter, in which he states:

“There has to be some monsters in The Abyss, there has to be demogorgon, bat, dog, something, it’s crazy if there’s nothing in there I think.”

This was disregarded due to the idea of ‘Demogorgon Fatigue.’ Additionally, the Stranger Things 5 documentary also addresses the uncertainty of what happens to Eleven in the final installment, with Matt Duffer acknowledging:

“God, I don’t know how to play this,” as the Duffer brothers had differed over how to conclude her story in an open or closed way.

Moreover, Ross Duffer also addressed Netflix’s involvement, explaining:

“We were getting hammered constantly by production and by Netflix for Episode 8.”

In the end, the Stranger Things 5 documentary focuses on the production process, including the script readings by all actors, and the factors that influenced how the season concluded.

The Stranger Things 5 documentary also created a buzz among enthusiasts about some plot points left unattended in season 5. Viewers recall that, for many seasons, Upside Down, or as it came to be known, Dimension X, had been defined as a realm of severe danger.

However, this final confrontation takes place within an empty realm, lacking all creatures, including Demogorgons, Demodogs, and Demobats varieties. The realm only had Vecna and Mind Flayer, which had remained as part of the lore since season 1.

Viewers have similarly been discussing related developments that have to do with characters and logic. The government’s apparent retreat following Dr. Kay’s pursuit, Henry Creel’s stated embrace of evil in contrast to The First Shadow, and Will’s survival have all prompted questions.

Mike’s theories regarding Eleven and the goodbye scene have similarly led viewers to believe that some of these story arcs have been tied up in a rushed format.
