Official: Rangers trade Soucy to the Islanders for 3rd round pick

With Carson Soucy being held out tonight for roster management reasons, the trade has been finalized. The Rangers are trading Soucy to the Islanders for a 3rd round pick in this year’s draft. This was the expected return for Soucy given what we know about trade deadline rentals, and at least somewhat recoups the trade acquisition cost from last year’s ill-advised trade at the deadline to acquire the defenseman.

Carson Soucy was not very good with the Rangers. After the deadline he was a healthy scratch for a few games as he was simply that bad. This year he improved, but it always looked like he was skating in mud. That’s not his fault, mind you. This was on Drury for sending a third round pick to Vancouver for a defenseman that can’t skate.

In sending Soucy to the Islanders for a 2026 3rd round pick, Drury at least recouped some cost. It’s worth noting the Rangers sent the first pick in the 3rd round last year to acquire him, while this pick will be towards the middle or end of the round. Assets are assets though, and that’s the goal.

This is the first trade between the Rangers and Islanders since 2010, when the Rangers sent defenseman Jyri Niemi to the Isles for a 6th round pick.
