  • The movie “Casino” will depart Netflix on June 1

Fans of Martin Scorsese’s 1995 epic crime drama “Casino” have only days to take in the flick one final time before it disappears from Netflix.

The largest streaming platform in the world, Netflix has confirmed that “Casino” will be a casualty of the company’s monthly purge. Netflix adds and removes content daily. The streaming giant’s licensing deals with studios and production companies typically run for only a few months.

“Casino” was added to the Netflix library on March 1. The title will no longer be watchable in less than two weeks on Monday, June 1.

After June 1, those interested in watching “Casino” will need to purchase or rent the movie through video-on-demand platforms like Amazon Prime Video and the Apple TV Store.

Alternatively, you can continue to watch the movie free-of-charge whenever you want if you have the DVD or Blu-ray edition.

Casino Flicks

While numerous movies have used Las Vegas and casinos as backdrops, a few notable mentions, including the “Ocean’s Eleven” films, “Casino Royale,” and “Rounders,” no movie embodies old-school Vegas more than “Casino.”

The film chronicles the glamour and brutal reality of Las Vegas when it was run by the mob in the 1970s and 1980s. “Casino,” along with “Mean Streets and “Goodfellas,” were among Scorsese’s first gangster genre masterpieces, clearing the way for later blockbusters that included “The Gangs of New York,” “The Departed,” and “The Irishman.”

“Casino” focuses on Sam “Ace” Rothstein, played by Robert De Niro, a sports handicapper and bookie tapped by the Chicago Mafia to run its Las Vegas casino. Ace falls for Ginger McKenna, played by Sharon Stone, a casino hustler and con artist whose substance abuse strains their business and personal relationships.

Ace manages to grow the casino’s profits, but he encounters difficulties in dealing with Nicky Santoro, played by Joe Pesci, a violent mob enforcer whose violent temper draws the eyes of federal and local law enforcement.

Scorsese Returning to Netflix

Though “Casino” is departing Netflix, Scorsese will soon return with a new series that he’s producing with the creators of “Billions.”

Scorsese is serving as the executive producer of “The Roman,” starring Oscar Isaac, Betty Gilpin (“Death by Lightning”), Alec Baldwin (“The Departed”), and David Costabile (“Billions,” “Breaking Bad”). The eight-episode series explores the “high-stakes world of Las Vegas.”

Creators/showrunners/co-executive producers Brian Koppelman and David Levien of “Billions” are no strangers to the world of gambling, as their screenwriting debut was the 1998 cult poker classic “Rounders.”

According to Netflix:

The hour-long drama is set in the high-stakes, sharp-elbowed present-day Las Vegas casino business, which is a modernized but still dangerous version of the legendary city. At the center of it all stands Robert ‘Bobby Red’ Redman, president of the hottest hotel casino in town, who has to make some long odds moves to try and secure his position and take more ground.”

However, no release date for the drama has been announced at the time of publication of this article.
