Swimming at the Paris Olympics 2024 live updates: Latest news and times as Katie Ledecky beats Ariarne Titmus in heats

American Gretchen Walsh spoke after qualifying fourth for tonight’s women’s 100m butterfly semifinals.

On her first taste of Paris 2024:

“It was pretty good. The time is what it is, I just wanted to make it back and get the first race out of the way. I feel a lot better now. I know it is just a swimming meet at the end of the day, and I’m happy to leave those initial jitters in the pool.”

On chasing her own world record:

“I will be going after it. I try to view it as my best time and every time I get into the pool I want to do a personal best, so that is the time I am shooting for.

“I can do it, and I am confident that I can. I am looking forward to the semis and the finals. Everyone is like I am, really close to 54 (seconds), so that would be awesome. I love having barriers set in my mind that I can break, and I think it is a great goal. I will be happy with anything.”
