Apple is working on a new AirTag and a new HomePod mini

Just as Xiaomi is rumored to be getting into the tracker business, Apple is working on upgrading its AirTag. The new AirTag was apparently supposed to come out this year, but was quietly pushed to the first half of 2026.

When it arrives, it will bring with it an improved pairing process, enhanced Precision Finding, and detailed battery level reporting. Additionally, it will have a feature called Improved Moving, which will likely let you see its precise location even when it’s moving around. And there’s another feature that’s focused on improving the tracking accuracy in crowded places.

It’s unclear whether these new features will make it to the original AirTag through a software update, and if so, which ones. The improved Precision Finding, for what it’s worth, may rely on an upgraded UWB chip, so that’s probably out of the question for the older AirTag.

Apple is also going to upgrade the HomePod mini soon, but it seems like this will only be a chip swap. The new model will use the S10, whereas the original HomePod mini launched in 2020 has the S5 on board. Even with the new chip, the speaker is unlikely to support Apple Intelligence features.
