Bean Sculptor Re-lists Tribeca Condo for $17.8M

The sculptor behind Cloud Gate, Chicago’s iconic bean statue, is once again trying to sell his Manhattan apartment.

Anish Kapoor has listed his Tribeca condo at 56 Leonard Street for $17.75 million, or $4,963 per square foot. He first tried to sell it in December, at nearly $18 million, but took it off the market after it failed to sell despite several price drops, Crain’s reported. It was re-listed in June.

On the 47th floor, the four-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom apartment sports a 50-foot glass wall facing the Hudson River, as well as 12-foot ceilings, a private elevator and a fireplace.

Serhant’s Krista Nickols and Martin Garcia have the listing.

Kapoor bought the home in 2016 for a little more than $13.5 million, around the time the artist married his second wife, garden designer Sophie Walker. The couple separated in 2022, and Kapoor married his third wife, Oumaima Boumoussaoui, in 2023.

The asking price is slightly higher than what other four-bedroom apartments in the same building have sold for. A similar four-bedroom on the 38th floor sold for about $15 million earlier this year. A three-bedroom unit in the building is listed for $8 million, and several two-bedroom units are listed for around $5 million.

Nearby, a five-bedroom penthouse at 111 Murray Street recently sold for $28.1 million, and Canadian comedian Gad Elmaleh sold his condo at 124 Hudson Street for $7.6 million a few weeks ago.

The building itself, 56 Leonard, was designed by architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. It’s a standout in the Tribeca skyline thanks to its unique silhouette resembling a Jenga tower mid-game. At the building’s base is a smaller version of Kapoor’s bean sculpture.

Alexico Group spent more than a decade working on the building, which stalled during the financial crisis. But a month after the sales launch in 2013, half the units were in contract for a reported $450 million.
