CM Punk opens up on heartbreaking reason he decided to return to WWE

CM Punk left WWE in 2014 but unexpectedly returned to the company in 2023. There were a lot of bridges burned in 2014, which made the audience, and even Punk, feel that his return was not possible. However, a certain moment made him realize this grudge is not worth it.

While speaking on All The Smoke: Unplugged, Punk revealed that after all the heat he had with Triple H in the past, he let it sink in 2021. After his heart condition was revealed, The Best in the World reached out to him.

He then correlated it with a 2014 clip featuring The Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan, in which their tension was put to rest. However, in a few days, Warrior passed away. Thus, in such situations, Punk felt that traction is not worth it. Back in 2023, when Nick Khan called him, he did ask how WWE was different now and actually learned how wildly distinct it was.

“It was because after a while I reached out to Triple H and I knew he had this heart condition thing, and I had seen a clip of [Hulk] Hogan and the [Ultimate] Warrior, and everything we do is filmed, so what’s real, what’s not, and it’s Hogan, so you don’t know what’s the truth, but they’re having this conversation and kind of apologising and forgiving each other, then a couple of days later the Ultimate Warrior dies. It just made me realise this s**t ain’t worth it, and I don’t care, and I get a call from Nick [Khan] like ‘hey, we want you to come back’. Oh. Interesting. What does that look like? Is the place different? It’s so wildly different, and if it wasn’t, I wouldn’t be here,” said CM Punk.
