WWE Superstar CM Punk is known for being unfiltered and outspoken. He made this abundantly clear when he interrupted The Undertaker’s tribute to Paul Bearer on RAW ahead of WrestleMania 29. Now, Punk has come forward to reveal the story behind that segment.
Speaking with Complex, the World Heavyweight Champion said he wasn’t comfortable with the segment because he didn’t have strong ties to Bearer, who was also known as Percy Pringle.
Thanks for the submission!
“It was heavy because while I knew Percy, I didn’t know him or have a connection to him like a lot of people in the company did, like Undertaker did. So I was careful to make sure, and his family members, I think his son signed off on it because I was like, I don’t want to do this unless everybody’s okay with it. Because at that time, you know, my deal was being a bad guy and trying to just get people to pay to see me beat up. So I wasn’t sure if they were going to be agreeable to everything because once you give me the green light, like, are you sure about this? Like, I’m, it’s gonna be, it’s gonna be pretty heavy.”
CM Punk noted that he was assured by Bearer’s loved ones that he would have loved the segment. He also said that it was an honor to be chosen to deliver the promo despite the stakes that WWE was dealing with at the time.
“And, you know, I was told by people that were super close to him that he would have loved it. So I can just go by their word. But yeah, that’s one of those things, it’s like it’s a privilege and it’s an honor to be able to be respected enough to be handed this gift almost. It’s a shame that he died, obviously. But, you know, to me, it’s the magic of what we do is we can pivot and use real-life stuff and kind of blur the line. And, you know, I was, I was grateful that I was allowed to be able to do that.”
What did CM Punk say to The Undertaker after interrupting Paul Bearer’s tribute?
CM Punk’s music blasted before The Undertaker had finished paying respects to his late manager, Paul Bearer, on March 11, 2013. The Best in the World stayed behind the ramp, didn’t go to the ring, and took the mic and said that he was sorry for The Phenom’s loss.
A second later, he flipped his statement and said he was sorry for The Undertaker’s future loss at WrestleMania 29 against him. He noted that while The Deadman’s ‘Mania record would forever be 20-0 for Paul Bearer, it would be 20-1 for the rest of the world.
CM Punk was later interrupted by Demon Kane, who couldn’t catch him. Despite The Second City Saint’s confidence, he failed to defeat Undertaker at ‘Mania 29. However, just a year later, Brock Lesnar ended the streak at 21-1.
