Woodchuck Lodge is a historic house on Burroughs Memorial Road in a remote part of the western Catskills in Roxbury, Delaware County, NY. Built in the mid-19th century, it was the last home of naturalist and writer John Burroughs from 1908, and is the place of his burial.

July 5, John Duda: Roxbury In John Burroughs’ Time
John Duda is a local historian. He is a trustee of the Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories, a trustee of Fleishmanns, NY’s Skene Memorial Library, and a member of numerous historical associations. He is a frequent and requested speaker at many historical societies. Duda will share historical facts on Burroughs’ life and Roxbury, NY during the era Burroughs lived. He illustrates the talk using his extensive antique postcard collection. Starts at 1 pm.
August 2, Ron Knapp: Trekking Through The Rugged Catskills in the Late 18th Century
Regular New York Almanack contributor Ron Knapp for an illustrated talk about New Englanders who trekked through the Catskills to Central NY’s “wilderness.” An engaging speaker, Knapp is the co-author of Theodore Burr and the Bridging of Early America in which the Catskills are featured. He is also a noted expert in early timber bridges and covered bridges. Starts at 11 am.
September 6, Annie Mardiney: Catskill Raptors
The wildly popular Annie Mardiney from Wild Mountain Birds in Ulster County shows and discusses her raptors. Join us and learn about these beautiful creatures. See them up close and personal. Learn how saving wildlife is a collaborative effort. Mardiney is a professionally licensed and insured wildlife rehabilitator. She is also licensed to use wild birds for education. Starts at 11 am.
October 4. Diane Galusha: Pepacton River and Reservoir
In 1880, John Burroughs, paddling a hand-made boat, floated down a river that today provides millions of New York City residents with water. Diane Galusha will present a study in contrasts, sharing excerpts from Burroughs’ Pepacton: A Summer Voyage, and her own book, Liquid Assets: A History of New York City’s Water System. She is also the author of several other books of local & regional history. She is President of the Historical Society of the Town of Middletown and serves as the town’s municipal historian. Starts at 11 am.
Woodchuck Lodge is located at 1633 Burroughs Memorial Road, in Roxbury, NY. All programs are free. Bringing a lawn chair is recommended. The Wild Saturday Series is supported by Catskill Watershed Corporation.
