A grotto shrine is built into and/or made from rocks. Grotto shrines can be natural or man-made. The story of a small grotto in Ballston Lake in Upstate New York is a complicated one – it’s the story of a boy’s sickly childhood, a compassionate priest, a grateful man, and a tragic death.
John A. Mancini was born on April 23,1919 in Ballston Lake, in Saratoga County, one of three children. Johnny, as he was then known, suffered from tuberculosis at an early age and the residual effects of that illness left him far weaker than his friends growing up.
