Paul Hollywood Reveals Why He Was Once Forced To Walk Out Of The ‘Great British Baking Show’ Tent

Fans tune into the Great British Baking Show for several reasons: The touching camaraderie, the beautiful bakes, and the hilarious hosts and judges. But recent seasons have brought out a new, surprisingly naughtier side from judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood.

Hollywood admitted as much during a new interview with Netflix’s Tudum in which he called out his Leith’s “embarrassing” sense of humor.

“The problem is, it’s quite a tactile thing, bread-making or whatever,” he admitted. “So certain shapes can look a bit rude on camera.”

“She’s embarrassing. That’s what she is,” Paul playfully said about his co-judge. “I mean, Prue will say it, and I’m sure she’s saying it deliberately. We were doing sausage rolls, and she said to a guy, ‘I don’t think your sausage is big enough,’ and I just stopped and I said, ‘I’m sorry, I’ve got to leave for 10 minutes,’ so I walked out the tent.”

The outlet also referenced another moment in Season 11 when Leith asked a contestant to describe the beaver-shaped cake she made. “So, Nicky, tell us about your beaver,” Leith says in the moment, making everyone in the tent laugh.

And hosts Noel Felding and Alison Hammond are never ones to shy away from a joke when they’re palling around with the contestants.

Hollywood maintained that it’s just part of the tent’s positive vibes.

“We all have a good sense of humor in the tent, and we all have a good laugh. I think that’s part of the magic of [the show],” Paul said. “The atmosphere in the tent is very jovial, it’s very happy, it’s very fun, so when someone says something to spark somebody else off, it just goes through it like wildfire.”

He also admitted that he has been giving out more of his infamous Hollywood Handshakes in recent seasons, but that’s just because the bakers have gotten that good. Nineteen-year-old Sumayah Kazi even got one during last week’s episode when she blew the judges away with her autumnal-themed cake.

“The standard has got better, and based on that alone, that’s why you’ll probably find more handshakes,” he argued.

“Every year they get better and better and better, and every year I end up giving out more and more handshakes, which is a little bit annoying, because they keep on moving the bar up,” he said.

New episodes of The Great British Baking Show air Fridays on Netflix.
