New York York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Forest Rangers battled two small wildfires last week including a small wildfire in the Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest which was started by an unattended campfire and another in the Hemlock Ridge Multiple Use Area in Ulster County.
On Tuesday, September 24 at about 10:40 am, DEC Lands and Forests staff alerted Ray Brook Dispatch to a ground fire on the Bridge Brook trail in the Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest in the Town of Piercefield in St. Lawrence County.
Forest Rangers quickly got the 180-square-foot fire under control. The fire was caused by an unextinguished campfire at an illegal site near a pond.
The 17,123-acre Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest includes the popular Horseshoe Lake, the Mt. Arab fire tower and the summits of 2,280-foot Coney Mountain and the 2,176-foot Goodman Mountain.
Three days later on Friday, September 27 at 12:30 pm, Forest Rangers Horn and Rusher responded to a fire call in the Hemlock Ridge Multiple Use Area in the Town of Plattekill, Ulster County. The 83-acre Hemlock Ridge Multiple Use Area is a forested hilly area on the western flank of e in the southern part of the county.
They joined volunteer firefighters to suppress the 0.25-acre fire. By 5 p.m., the surface fire was extinguished. Rangers patrolled the fire and declared it out the following morning.
