The Rangers have placed forward Matt Rempe on IR with an upper body injury that is actually a broken thumb. Rempe broke his thumb in his fight with Ryan Reaves in the Rangers OT loss to San Jose two weeks ago. Rempe, who has had a very strong start to his season, is out indefinitely. Brennan Othmann replaced him at first, and now it’s Jaroslav Chmelar’s turn to get a crack at the NHL lineup.
Placing Rempe on IR was a necessity, as Urho Vaakanainen missed practice today and the Rangers recalled defenseman Connor Mackey just in case Vaakanainen can’t go tomorrow against Carolina. It’s worth noting the Rangers recalled Mackey, not Scott Morrow. Probably because Morrow is best served getting big minutes in Hartford instead of sitting in the press box. Also the Rangers like to recall veterans in these situations so they get a few days of a larger paycheck.
