Rangers reportedly “gearing up” for a JJ Peterka offer sheet

Per Elliotte Friedman on SN590, the Rangers are reportedly gearing up for a JJ Peterka offer sheet. Peterka, an RFA, has been rumored to be a target for GM Chris Drury for a few months, and we do know that he gets tunnel vision when he sets his sights on a specific player. The Rangers and Sabres have been connected for a while, but most of that talk has been surrounding K’Andre Miller and Bowen Byram, with Peterka mentioned in passing.

This could be a ploy by the Rangers to get Buffalo to the trading table, as the RFA compensation seems a bit off for the Blueshirts for a Peterka offer sheet. Teams need their original 2026 draft picks to submit an offer sheet, and the Rangers no longer have their 2nd round pick as a product of the Patrik Nemeth contract dump in 2022. There’s also the question about their 2026 1st round pick, which would only be available if the Rangers give the 12th overall to Pittsburgh later this month.

Operating under the assumption the Rangers give Pittsburgh the 12th overall, they’d only be able to submit an offer sheet for two tiers: $4.68 million-$7.02 million (1st/3rd round compensation), or over $11.7 million, which is 4 first round picks. Buffalo matches their 1st/3rd round compensation, so I can’t imagine the Rangers surrendering 4 first round picks for Peterka.

Given the compensation, a Peterka offer sheet will likely require the Rangers to re-acquire their 2nd round pick next season from Utah. Certainly possible, but we haven’t heard any rumors connecting the two teams yet.
