Rangers sign Conor Sheary to PTO

The Rangers have signed Conor Sheary to a PTO, the first PTO to be signed by the Blueshirts this offseason. It’s expected the Rangers will bring in a few PTO players as insurance on the kids should they need more time in the AHL. Sheary in particular is going to be insurance on Brennan Othmann, Gabe Perreault, and Brett Berard in camp, should none of the three secure a spot in October.

Sheary fell off from his first two years in Pittsburgh where he put up his career high of 23-30-53 in 61 games in the 2016-2017 Cup winning season for the Penguins. He’s never really come close to that scoring pace, and his highest raw point total was his 19-24-43 season with the Washington Capitals in 2021-2022. Sheary only played 5 games in the NHL last year, spending most of his time in the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch.

Conor Sheary and Tampa agreed to terminate his contract in June, with Sheary leaving $2 million on the table for another shot in the NHL. Given his familiarity with Sullivan, it’s safe to say Sheary will at least get a long look. That said, the Rangers want youth and will give that trio a chance first.
