Rangers trade Brennan Othmann to Calgary

Well at least there was one “big” move today, as the Rangers trade Brennan Othmann to the Calgary Flames for prospect Jacob Battaglia. Othmann, now 23 years old, was Chris Drury’s first ever pick as an NHL General Manager. He never panned out, scoring just one goal and adding two assists in 42 NHL games. It wasn’t about the points either, as Othmann just never showed enough to stick at the NHL level while also struggling mightily at the AHL level to start this season.

Battaglia, Calgary’s 2nd round pick in 2024, is a 6’1, 200 lb winger finishing up his age-19 season in the OHL. Battaglia turns 20 in 11 days, so he will be eligible to play in the AHL next season. He projects out as a toolsy middle six winger who can score and has good vision who excels in transition. He has struggled a bit this year on the score sheet, but that doesn’t take away from the skill set.

Battaglia, at the very least, has a tad more potential than Othmann, who appeared to have run his course with the Rangers.
