Another day, another rumor that the Rangers are going to do something that makes fans question the plan. Vince Mercogliano is reporting that the Rangers appear to be unwilling to part with defenseman Carson Soucy after “paying a premium” to acquire him. With the Rangers likely to keep Carson Soucy for all the wrong reasons, the muddied waters on the left side of the defense becomes clearer.
Per Vince, it sounds like Chris Drury may be hesitant to trade Soucy because he gave up a high third round pick for it all to fall flat. Now the hope is Soucy rebounds under Mike Sullivan. It’s a decent hope, since Sully is a top-five coach in the NHL. But it’s also the sunk cost fallacy: the phenomenon whereby a person is reluctant to abandon a strategy or course of action because they have invested heavily in it, even when it is clear that abandonment would be more beneficial.
Soucy is a sunk cost. With the Rangers likely to keep Carson Soucy and move on from K’Andre Miller, they are contradicting their own plans to get younger and faster. Soucy can’t skate anymore. Miller is easily their best skater on the blue line. If anything, the hope should be that the kid rebounds and figures it out under the new coach, not the aging veteran who has shown multiple seasons of decline.
