Halloween, let alone Christmas, may not be top of mind yet, but the New York Botanical Garden is celebrating early with the return of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” immersive exhibit running September 25 through November 30. This year, the nighttime light trail, inspired by the 1993 Tim Burton film, features 8,300 square feet of light installation and new scenes and music, according to a release.

Disney Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” Light Trail is created by Adventurelive, the producing team behind Broadway’s “Hamilton,” and LETSGO, a Madrid-based team behind Tim Burton’s “Labyrinth,” a release states, adding that it’s also “presented by special arrangement” with Buena Vista Theatrical.
Maggie Brohn, chief operating officer at Adventureland, says that “stepping onto the trail is like walking straight into the world of Tim Burton. Visitors are instantly transported to the worlds of Halloween Town and Christmas Town, where the magic of the classic film surrounds guests at every turn. 3D printed iconic characters, LED lighting, and interactive video projections delight the senses and spark the imagination.”

There are glowing pumpkins, larger-than-life movie characters like Jack Skellington and Sally, a glow-in-the-dark graveyard, and more. A map of the trail shows 24 character stops that take approximately 45 minutes to walk through.
This year, the experience is expanding west to Texas, where it will set up shop at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin.
“‘The Nightmare Before Christmas; continues to captivate audiences yearly as it offers a truly unique blend of two iconic holidays, Halloween and Christmas, that most films feature separately. Its animation style, beautiful music, and unforgettable characters create timeless charm that appeal to new viewers and longtime fans who are craving nostalgia,” says Brohn, explaining that “Austin’s vibrant energy and family-oriented community” was a fit for the exhibit.

The trail is suitable for all ages, with tickets to the New York exhibit starting at $33 for kids and $45 for adults.
Also on at the Botanical Garden this fall is the Van Gogh’s Flowers exhibit running through October 26 (with a Starry Nights evening exhibit on select nights through September).
