“They’re our p*mps” – Sean Strickland recalls being pressured into accepting Dricus du Plessis rematch by the UFC

Sean Strickland recently claimed that he was pressured into accepting the Dricus du Plessis rematch by the UFC.

Strickland lost the middleweight championship to du Plessis at UFC 297 in January 2024 after getting outpointed over five rounds. The two men were booked for a title rematch at UFC 312 last February, where ‘Stillknocks’ dominated Strickland and defeated the American again via unanimous decision.

During a recent conversation with Jon-Bernard Kairouz, Strickland claimed that he was pressured into taking the du Plessis fight while undergoing treatment for a shoulder injury. He said:

“Before the Dricus fight, I was f**king riding with [motocross rider] Axell Hodges and I broke my shoulder. So I was in Colombia getting stem cells on my shoulder, and they hit me up for the fight and the thing with the UFC, you don’t say no. They are p*mps. You don’t say no to the masters. So I was kind of backed up into a corner taking that fight.”

He added:

“So taking this time off, letting my body heal has been amazing. This shoulder feels f**king great. I do miss fighting, and I miss performing, but it’s been nice to be a fat, lazy, piece of sh*t for a while.”

Sean Strickland explains not being interested in fighting Robert Whittaker

In the same conversation, Sean Strickland shared his thoughts on a potential Robert Whittaker clash. The former UFC middleweight champion dismissed the idea of facing Whittaker unless necessary and named Anthony Hernandez as an opponent he’d prefer.

Speaking to Jon-Bernard Kairouz (via @ChampRDS on X), Strickland said:

“It’s not a fight I’m excited about. He’s like the girl at the party, everybody’s f***ed. And you’re just like… maybe if it’s 3 AM and there’s nobody left, I might try it… Whittaker’s body count is too high. I wanna fight somebody that makes me excited. ‘Fluffy’ [Anthony Hernandez] is a fight that I’m excited, like, ‘F**k yeah, give me something new, something different.'”
