Vincent van Gogh’s famous flower paintings will come to life at the New York Botanical Garden this summer. Opening on May 24, a new floral exhibition titled “Van Gogh’s Flowers” will present botanical displays alongside large-scale contemporary art inspired by the Dutch post-Impressionist artist, as well as an after-hours drone show celebrating “Starry Night” and other iconic pieces.

The Conservatory Lawn will transform into a field of monumental sunflower sculptures by immersive artist Cyril Lancelin alongside living sunflowers and other plants, all inspired by Van Gogh’s artwork. Larger-than-life creations by Graphic Rewilding will be on display in the Reflecting Pools of the garden’s visitor center and in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory’s Palms of the World Gallery.
Artist Amie Jacobsen’s three-dimensional sculptures inspired by van Gogh’s paintings of irises, imperial, fritillaries, oleanders, and roses will be on view in the Conservatory, next to walls of living plants. Plus, the garden of the hospital in Arles, which van Gogh painted in 1889, will be reinterpreted with living flowers and architectural elements.
To celebrate the exhibition’s opening weekend on May 24, 25, and 26, the garden will host a hands-on LEGO pop-up, drop-in painting workshops, and live demonstrations from plein-air artists.
On select evenings, “Starry Nights” will “capture the twinkling allure of the artist’s nightime scenery,” culminating with an illuminated, dancing drone show celebrating van Gogh’s most iconic work. The event includes live music, performances, cocktails, and light bites.
Tickets for Starry Nights, which will start at $39, go on sale on Tuesday, April 29, at 10 a.m. Join the waitlist for exclusive access here.
