Who is the Winnower in Destiny 2

In the latest Monument of Triumph update of Destiny 2, the Winnower possesses Lodi and addresses the Guardian directly. He opens the conversation by acknowledging the bloodshed between the two sides and referring to it as a spat, before pointing at the Nine and their role in the conflict.

The Winnower then tells the Guardian that the pieces the Nine want knocked down are already set, and a showdown between him and us, champions of light and dark, is inevitable. This suggests that the Winnower is, after all, the main boss of the narrative, which isn’t surprising given his role in the Destiny universe.

Additionally, the Winnower urges the Guardian to drag the Nine back into the fight and end things on their own terms like a true weapon.

At the end, the cosmic being promises not to abandon the Guardian once it is all over in a really eerie manner, before Lodi regains control of his body. The appearance confirms that the Winnower has been an active presence throughout the narrative, watching our every move.

For those not familiar with the Winnower’s history, he is one of two primordial entities described in the Unveiling lore book. Alongside the Gardener, he existed before time itself in a metaphysical garden, playing a game of growing and cutting down flowers that represented the evolution of the universe.

While the Gardener planted seeds freely, letting life grow without restriction, the Winnower cut down anything that did not conform, shaping the universe in his image. Together, they represent the forces of light and darkness at their most fundamental level.

All of this basically means that at some point, the Guardian will have to face the literal devil of the Destiny 2 universe, the Winnower.
