Why did Shubman Gill walk off after facing just 3 balls on Day 2 of IND vs SA 2025 1st Test?

Team India captain Shubman Gill walked off the field after just facing a handful of deliveries in the first innings on Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, November 15. The ace batter got off the mark in sublime fashion, but injured his neck in the process, forcing him to seek medical attention.

Shubman Gill had come out to bat after Washington Sundar’s soft dismissal to Simon Harmer in the 35th over. The new batter took initiative right away, dispatching the spinner for a boundary with a sweep shot towards the end of the over.

However, Gill looked in discomfort immediately after playing the shot. The physios arrived at the scene soon after, and following a brief chat, the player walked off with the medical team to the dressing room.

With the skipper retired hurt for the time being, Rishabh Pant walked out to the middle as the next batter, marking his return to international cricket after an injury layoff.

At the time of Gill’s departure from the field, India were placed at 79-2 after 34.5 overs.

Shubman Gill has had issues with neck spasms before as well

The right-handed batter has had to deal with similar problems with his neck in the past. He was ruled out due to a similar injury during the second T20I against Sri Lanka in 2024.

The injury struck once again soon after, forcing him to sit out the first Test against New Zealand at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in October 2024.

Gill has been playing non-stop cricket for a while, and there have been concerns regarding his workload, especially since he is an all-format player now, along with leadership responsibilities. So far, there is no official update regarding the severity of the injury, or whether he will return to bat in the first innings or not.
